Batteries
Compliance is changing in Ontario and it's a pivotal time for the battery industry.
January 31, 2020 is the deadline for Producers of new single-use and rechargeable batteries (and Electrical and Electronic Equipment) to register with the Resource Productivity and Recovery Authority(RPRA).
Battery Produces are defined as:
- Brand holder of new batteries (single-use or rechargeable batteries)
- Importers and/or sellers of new batteries in Ontario
If that sounds like you, you are likely considered a producer of batteries in Ontario under Ontario's Battery Regulation. Learn more about the regulation here:
Why does that matter to you?
As a Producer, you will have new legal obligation to collect and recycle batteries.
The Government of Ontario has finalized a regulation to create a new recycling system that is based on individual producer responsibility in Ontario for batteries that is set to launch on July 1, 2020.
What is Individual Producer Responsibility (IPR)?
Individual Producer Responsibility means that as a Producer, you are individually responsible for the product and/or packaging you produce/supply into the Ontario marketplace at the end of its life. As a Producer, you have a diversion target, which is the amount of product and/or packaging you will legally be required to collect and manage at its end-of-life.
Ryse Solutions is a registered Producer Responsibility Organization (PRO) with over 50 years combined compliance experience. We are here to answer your questions, assist you as you navigate these new waters, and be your partner in compliance.
